Why use bodywork masking tape?

The different types of bodywork masking tape

Bodywork masking tape must withstand external stresses and provide adequate protection for the area it covers. Humidity, heat or solvent, the masking equipment must not come unstuck or allow paint to seep through. For optimum results, there is a wide range of masking accessories and equipment:
Bodywork adhesive tape:
The adhesive tape is highly resistant to shearing and high temperatures. It is used to protect areas not affected by sanding work by separating the surface to be sanded from other parts of the bodywork. You can opt for double-sided adhesive tape, which can bring together several elements made of different materials.
Bodywork masking film :
Mask film is used to mask and protect large areas of your bodywork. Easy to apply, it also prevents the appearance of residues such as product splashes or colours.
Bodywork masking tape:
Effective for fixing the film to the contours of the bodywork, masking tape is easy to cut by hand. Because it tends to curl quickly, it's easy to use on small body contours. The bodywork masking tape categories include :
- Masking tape to seal windshields and windows;
- Foam masking tape suitable for trunks, bonnets and door joints;
- Joint protection tape is ideal for covering hard-to-reach areas such as window, lid, bonnet or roof joints;
- Reinforced masking tape to protect surfaces during sandblasting;
Masking net :
Masking mesh has the advantage of being flexible and resistant to high temperatures of up to 130°C. It adapts to curves in the bodywork, making it ideal for decorative painting.
The special wheel cover :
A special tarpaulin can be fitted to cover the wheels. It optimises the bodybuilder's work when he works on one of the rims. The tarpaulin is used to apply paint without dismantling the tyres or damaging the parts that are not to be repaired or painted.
Kraft masking paper :
Kraft paper specially designed for masking is also available. It's very easy to install, and folds and cuts in no time at all. Masking paper is generally used to cover surfaces before applying primer, paint or clearcoat.
Steps to follow for correctly masking car parts
- The first step is to clean the area to be repaired. A degreaser can be used with a clean sponge to remove the rest of the product.
- Once the area to be repaired is ready, mask the rest of the vehicle or parts not affected by the film chosen, or any other masking equipment suitable for your use.
- Don't neglect small areas such as doorways or areas between rooms.
- Once you've installed your masking equipment properly, add bodywork masking tape to secure your film to the bodywork and prevent it from shifting.
