Why do I need to add a clearcoat?
Whether it's a deep or superficial repair, professional bodybuilders have to carry out these tasks:
- Prepare the damaged surface to be treated;
- Spray the surface with the chosen paint;
- Add a finish to complete the effect.
The finishing stage includes sanding for a smooth, even finish. It also includes the addition of a clearcoat. This essential step is strongly recommended by professionals in the trade. In fact, an applied clearcoat adds a touch of sparkle to the finish. It improves the finish and gives the surface extra protection. Clearcoats are generally acrylic resin-based. Colourless, they should be mixed with a hardener for maximum protection and 5% to 10% of thinner for a smoother mix.
What are the different Glasurit clearcoats?
- Gloss clearcoat. There are different types of gloss clearcoat in the Glasurit range. It all depends on what the bodybuilder is looking for: productivity or energy savings? Use hS VOC 923-610 5l fast-drying clearcoat for even faster drying, you can add thedrying accelerator additive 523-15. Clearcoat with additives 523-15 dries in 2-3 hours at a temperature of 20°C, otherwise 10-15 minutes in your spray booth at 60°C will ensure that it's dry enough to handle the vehicle. The glasurit HS Universal Clearcoat VOC 923-625 5L is a very premium and versatile clearcoat. You'll be able to spot repair small parts as well as complete vehicles that need to be refurbished. - Matt clearcoat such as glasurit 923-55 0.75l
- Semi gloss clearcoat like Glasurit 923-58 0.75l You can mix your semi gloss clearcoat and matt clearcoat to obtain the desired level of gloss.

How do I apply Glasurit clearcoat?
Applying your Glasurit clearcoat is easy, just follow the instructions in the paint manufacturer's technical data sheets:
- It is important to wait for the paint to dry completely before applying the clearcoat;
- Once the painted surface is dry, clean the bodywork. Washing gets rid of sanding residues, dust and other contaminants…
- Do not touch the surface after cleaning;
- Then mask the parts with masking paper, tiro or body masking film, such as the chrome, windows, wheels or number plate;
- Mix your clearcoat with a thinner or hardener, depending on your needs and use;
- Choose a gun with an HVLP or RP cap and a 1.3 nozzle. Your air pressure on the pressure gauge should be between 2 and 3 bar to achieve an air flow of 0.7 bar at the gun nozzle outlet. Setting the right air pressure and spray width to control spraying is essential to achieving a beautiful bodywork clearcoat;
- Apply your clearcoat, keeping the spraygun well away from the surface; allow 3 minutes to evaporate between your two coats of clearcoat.
- Wait until the surface is dry;
- Finally, sand the finish and polish with a good body polisher and polishing foams. We recommend 3M 50487 green foam and green liquid stopper 51815 or the Farécla range specialising in detailing.

- Always start by reading the technical data sheet for your product. The number of layers, usage requirements and other details may vary from one manufacturer to another;

- Apply your product in a well-ventilated garage, but not outside either;
- Do not touch your eyes, mouth or face when spraying;
- Once the operation is over, wash your hands;
- Cleaning your equipment is also important for maintaining it and extending its life.
