Tips before painting your car
To achieve a successful car paint job, you need to apply certain preparation tips.
Study the location and timing
It's important to find a suitable location with the right conditions for the job.
The location must :
- Be dry, closed and free from dirt.
- Have good ventilation and sufficient lighting and electricity.
- For temperature : Degrees between 65 and 90. Colder or warmer is not ideal.
For timing :
Once the site is ready, you need to decide when to start work.
- Summer is a good choice.
- For the colder seasons, afternoons are the best option.
Prepare the equipment :
- Basecoat spraygun : A suitable gravity spray gun will help get the job done. For painting, use a basecoat spraygun with an HVLP cap, such as Devilbiss DVI-C-000-13B+ or Satajet X5500 1061887
- Air compressor : It must meet the requirements of your basecoat spraygun. A 60 gallon tank with a 5 to 6 HP compressor is normally ideal for car painting. For minor touch-ups, you can use a 25-35 gallon air compressor.
- Sandpaper and Sanding Block : Sandpapers are useful for sanding the car's exterior before applying paint. They smooth out old paint surfaces and roughen up glossy areas so that the paint can adhere better. Similarly, sanding blocks help to hold sandpapers better for a uniform finish.
Choosing car paint
There are three types of car paint: acrylic, spray and epoxy.
- Acrylic paint is the most common. It is made from acrylic powder and water.
- Spray paint is paint that is sprayed onto the surface to be painted.
- Epoxy paint is a two-component paint that is applied to the surface to be painted. It hardens in the heat.
Safety measures
Safety equipment is compulsory:

They are essential for sanding, painting and working with chemicals.
