Why apply a primer?
A primer is a product that creates a stable surface for new paint to adhere to. Applying coats of paint directly to the bodywork does not necessarily guarantee that they will last or that the result will be perfect. On the other hand, adding a coat of primer offers a number of advantages. It also masks imperfections on the surface being repaired or coated, and protects and insulates it from rust. Thanks to its composition, the primer allows the paint to set properly, increasing its longevity.
Conditions for applying a primer
Applying a primer is sometimes necessary, even essential, for the success of your rendering. It gives a solid, even finish. The primer gives you a stable surface, ready to receive your colour.

- If your surface is too porous, the primer allows you to avoid applying several coats of paint.
- If the bodywork is too shiny and icy, you risk having problems with paint adhesion. The primer solves difficult adhesion problems and guarantees an excellent texture for your paint.
In addition to these cases, here are the conditions that will prompt you to opt for a primer before applying the paint:
- The surface of your bodywork has never been painted. In this case, a primer is essential for the paint to adhere properly;
- You apply water-based paint;
- A change of colour from dark to light and vice versa…
How do you choose your primer?
The primer you choose depends on the colour of the surface being repaired, the substrate and the application. You can choose between:
- Water-based primers are renowned for their ecological credentials. They dry quickly and are easy to clean with water. What's more, these primers don't have a strong odour.
- Unlike the first type, oil-based primers have a strong odour. They take longer to dry and can only be cleaned using appropriate products. These primers must be handled in a ventilated room. However, they are used on surfaces where water-based primers won't stick.
- Filler primers for filling
- Wet-on-wet or no-sanding primers for greater productivity
