What is a bodywork primer?
Primer is a substance used before applying car paint. It is essential for a good finish. The car primer improves the car's appearance and provides protection against rust.

A spray gun uses a large volume of air passing through the gun to atomise the primer. The low pressure coming out of an HVLP gun means that much more primer can be applied to the vehicle than can be applied through the air.

How do I apply car paint primer correctly?
It's easy to change the appearance of bodywork by changing the paintwork. But before painting, it is necessary to apply a primer for car paint. To succeed in this task, you need the right equipment and the right information.
Materials and tools
- Paper, tarpaulin or other covering
- Masking tape
- Degreaser
- Fine sandpaper and coarse sandpaper
- Primer
- Goggles and dust mask
- Body filler
- Car wash and cleaning equipment
Step 1: Removing dirt
The very first step is to wash the car to get rid of any dirt or grime. Otherwise, dust, grit or dirt can interfere with the primer and paint. It is also advisable to use a grease or wax remover to get rid of dirt that cannot be washed off with soap or water.
Step 2: Sanding the car
Now that the car is clean, the rough areas need to be sanded down. For very difficult areas, use hard-grit sandpaper.
Any holes or hollows that need repairing should be filled with body filler and then sanded down.
The aim is to iron out any imperfections so that you have a flat, smooth area to paint.

Step 3: Allow the car to dry
Make sure the car is completely dry before you start painting. This may take a few hours after the car has been washed, depending on the weather.
Step 4: Cover areas not to be painted
It is important to cover all the areas that are not to be painted. Paper or fabric can be used to cover all mirrors, windows, chrome and other areas.
Be sure to tape all edges. This is very similar to taping over the moulding when painting a wall. The paper can be peeled off if it extends beyond the edge.

Paint adheres much better to a primed car than to an unprimed car.
An exterior paint primer should be used as it will be more resistant than interior primers.
