What is a primer used for?
The primer is an industrial product that allows a new paint to adhere to the surface to be repaired. Applying a coat of paint directly to a substrate may not guarantee an even result. The new paint may not even hold, making it necessary to add a primer. This product masks imperfections and creates a stable surface for the new coat of paint. So you can be sure that the paint will set. With a primer, you also extend the life of the paint. The end result will be impeccable and well finished.
Conditions for applying a primer
Applying a primer undercoat before painting is highly recommended. Adding it is sometimes essential if you are not to ruin your work and achieve a quality finish. Some of the conditions under which you may need to apply a primer include :
- A porous surface requires several coats of paint to hide the porosity, and therefore a certain amount of waste;
- A surface that is too icy and does not allow the paint to cling to the surface;
- You are applying paint to your bodywork for the first time;
- You can change the colour of your paint from dark to light or vice versa;
- You plan to use water-based paint on a surface painted with oil-based paint.
How do I choose a primer?
The choice of primer depends on the surface of your bodywork, its use and the paint to be applied. You can apply water- or oil-based primers. Water-based primers are environmentally friendly and quick-drying. Oil-based primers are generally used on surfaces where water-based primers are not applicable.
Several colours of primer are also available. The colour depends mainly on the tint to be applied and other body components (wheels, bumpers…). Clear primers are used for light colours. Dark grey and black primers are applied for dark colours.

What different types of primer are there?
There are different types of bodywork undercoat to meet the needs of bodywork specialists:
- Primer filler to fill in roughness, holes and make a smooth bodywork surface: 522621 primer filler Lesonal white 3L, 522620 primer filler Lesonal grey 3L
- Insulating primer that protects against rust but has no filling effect.
- Epoxy primer to insulate and protect sheet metal against corrosion and can be applied to any substrate or bodywork material
- Aphosphating wash primer that provides good adhesion to steel and aluminium but does not provide particularly good protection against corrosion. Be careful never to put body filler on top of a wash primer, as this can cause paint and clearcoat to peel off. We recommend Lesonal 358947 wash primer spray for bonding to steel and aluminium.
- Wet-on-wet primer, also known as no-sanding primer , for greater productivity: 522619 primer filler Lesonal black 3L
- 2K primer that requires the insertion of a hardener or catalyst
- 1K primer spray Lesonal grey primer 1k ready to use 514189
- UV primer for very rapid curing with a UV bodywork lamp. The investment in a UV lamp is significant, but you will gain considerable productivity and save energy. And yes, there's no longer any need to turn on your spray booth!
- Plastic hook for plastic body parts such as bumpers: Lesonal 523275 1K plastic adhesion primer.

How do I apply Lesonal primer?
Applying a primer is similar to conventional painting. You'll need a spray can to make the application a success. Here are a few tips to help you succeed:
- Prepare and sand the surface to be painted;
- Place the spray can 25 cm from the surface and spray the primer surfacer ;
- Cover the entire surface to be painted;
- Apply several coats according to the information on the packaging;
- Leave to dry between coats;
- Sand, clean and rinse the surface;
- Make sure the rendering is completely dry before applying the first coat of paint.
For your protection, make sure you are wearing protective equipment such as goggles, gloves and a mask. Avoid touching your face or eyes when applying any product.
