In terms of primers, Glasurit provides effective products to facilitate the application of all your paints to any car painting surface.
Use of a primer
The primer is used to prepare and protect the surface to be coated. Applying paint directly to a surface does not guarantee that it will last. A poorly maintained surface, for example, can cause paint to peel off or give an imperfect finish. This is where the primer comes in. This product is used to create a stable surface for the new paint. Coats of paint are more likely to bond properly to the bodywork. What's more, you can be sure that your application will last longer, and that you'll achieve a perfect, even finish. Primer is also useful when the bodywork is too shiny. In this case, there is a risk of the paint slipping. A primer ensures better adhesion and optimum results.
The different types of primer
There are different types of bodywork undercoat to meet the needs of bodywork specialists:
- Primer filler to fill in roughness, holes and make a smooth bodywork surface Glasurit 285-505 grey, Glasurit 285-555 black and Glasurit 285-655 white
- Epoxy primer to insulate and protect sheet metal against corrosion and can be applied to any substrate or bodywork material
- A phosphating wash primer that provides good adhesion to steel and aluminium but does not provide particularly good protection against corrosion. Be careful never to put body filler on top of a wash primer, as this can cause paint and clearcoat to peel off.
- Wet-on-wet primer, also known as no-sanding primer, for greater productivity. Glasurit 285-31 grey, Glasurit 285-38 white and Glasurit 285-49 black
- 2K primer that requires the insertion of a hardener or catalyst
- 1K primer
- UV primer for very rapid curing with a UV bodywork lamp. The investment in a UV lamp is significant, but you will gain considerable productivity and save energy. And yes, there's no longer any need to turn on your spray booth! Glasurit 151-170
When should you apply your primer?
It is always advisable to apply an undercoat of primer before painting to ensure a robust, durable finish. However, it is sometimes essential to apply a primer, otherwise you risk ruining the result. The conditions for applying a primer include :
- The porosity of your bodywork surface;
- The material of your bodywork support
- The bodywork is too shiny and glossy, which prevents the new paintwork from adhering;
- A body surface painted for the first time ;
- A change in the colour of the coating from light to dark or from dark to light;
- You're applying water-based paint to bodywork painted with oil-based products.
How do you choose your undercoat primer?
Primers depend on the surface to be painted and the paint in question. You can choose between :- Water-based primers : they are environmentally friendly and easy to clean. They dry quickly and don't have a strong odour.
- Oil-based primers : useful if water-based primers don't stick. They can be cleaned with products such as thinners, have a strong odour and take a long time to dry.
What are the advantages of Glasurit primers?

- Your new paint won't yellow and you'll get the colour you want;

- Your bodywork benefits from extra protection and strength.
How do you apply your Glasurit primer?
Applying a primer is the same as applying paint. Follow these key tips for a successful operation:
- Use a spray gun for primer and undercoat with a suitable nozzle in 1.8
- If you are in a hurry, you can use a spray can of primer surfacer for an even finish that covers all parts of the surface;
- Remember to prepare the surface to be treated before applying your primer surfacer;
- You should also sand the surface to be painted before adding the primer;
- Spray the primer, holding the can a few centimetres from the surface to be painted;
- Cover all areas, applying several coats as required. The number of layers is specific to each manufacturer. So be sure to check the technical data sheet for your primer;
- Allow to dry between coats of primer;
- Once the last coat is dry, sand the surface;
- Clean and rinse the bodywork to get rid of dirt ;
- Allow to dry completely before applying the first coat of paint.
